Clary came out and listened, too.

"Do you hear it?"

"Yes," said Clary. She frowned. "I'm afraid it's... it's someone who..." She peered towards the crying noise. "Yes, here he comes." Her strong hand gripped Lina's shoulder for a moment. "You'd better go," she said. "I'll take care of this."

Letter from Editor of Random House Children's Books

At first glance, The City of Ember would seem to be a science fiction novel. The story is set in the future, our future, and the human race is on the verge of extinction. Science fiction, right? But The City of Ember is so much more.
The book you hold in your hands transcends genre. It's one of those rare stories that have something for everyone. Adventure, myster, danger... and then there are those fabulous characters- Lina, who loves to run and dreams of a city of light; Doon, quiet and perceptive, who knows he could save Ember if he could only get the chance. And while Lina and Doon struggle to do just that, they must grapple with anger, greed, loss, responsibility, and friendship.
Jeanne DuPrau's vision of humanity's last flickering is compelling- and to think that this is but her first novel! Her writing is stunningly clear, and the world she's created is like one you already know. Indeed, I have a feeling that most of you will remember this story for a long time to come. I hope so. Enjoy it.

Quoted from City of Ember

The city of Ember is the only light in the dark world. Beyond Ember, the darkness goes on in all directions. -excerpt of THE CITY OF EMBER
